Introduction

Taiwan Clinical Trial Consortium for Respiratory Diseases (TCORE) mainly focuses in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, obstructive sleep apnea, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), pulmonary tuberculosis, pneumonia, critical care, and so on. The above-mentioned lung diseases impose a huge impact on human health, and further studies are needed to help patients. Taking COPD for example, COPD is a major public health problem mainly caused by cigarette smoking. Mortality due to COPD has risen sharply over the past several decades despite a major decline in smoking prevalence. There is no cure for COPD, and treatments are only moderately effective at relieving symptoms. Novel approaches for prevention and treatment of COPD are urgently needed. TCORE is a collaborative consortium by specialists of database processing, chest image and pulmonary medicine. They are full of experience in basic research and clinical practice. The key missions of the TCORE are to assist the design and conduct of multi-center (investigator-initiated, industry or international research groups) clinical trials, as well as the establishment of biospecimen database. The ultimate goal for TCORE is to enable clinical trials of potential therapies and speed the development of treatments that will improve the length and quality of life for patients.

Missions and Work

1. Establish cohesive organization of clinical trials and this clinical trial platform will provide consistent and standard medical care.

2. Establish biospecimen bank, covering the genomic / proteomic / metabolomic analysis capabilities. Establish and maintain databases of respiratory diseases patients.

3. Perform multi-center (international) clinical trials.

4. Provide opportunity to test potential new drugs in Taiwan.
